I wonder if it's the city itself that's confusing or the image it's given from the outside. It seems a lot of people who ask about Portland have some preconceived ideas of what the city is like and then are surprised at some of the things they didn't expect to see when they get here.

I agree anyway with the suggestions of Laurelhurst Park and Mt. Tabor Park. I think I would choose Laurelhurst.

I'm not sure that there are more smokers nowadays , it's just more noticeable. They can't smoke in buildings, so they all cluster out on sidewalks, outside the buildings.

But I do agree, there are too many. Foolish kids.

Temping does sound like a great choice for you, with your diverse skills. Off the top of my head I'd say pharmacy is your best bet, but you never know. Definitely jump in to temping or volunteering right when you get here so you can get your foot in the door. It can take a year or so to get an actual job, depending on how choosy you are.

It's like Portland didn't get the memo that smoking is bad for you. That or the rain makes everyone crazy.
I don't think Portland has a reputation for healthy living, I think that depends on where you do your research. Between the food cart scene, the drug problem, the homelessness, and the lack of jobs, I would say Portland is a rather unhealthy place to live.

Portland has a great deal of tourist spots; too many to mention. The climate is constantly being discussed here. Check out some of the many threads on the subject. Meanwhile, here is a website to get you started. But remember. There is no substitute for seeing for yourself.

Funny you lob food carts in there as a sign of unhealthiness. Forbes listing of the 20 healthiest cities cites the food carts as one of the factors that puts Portland Number FOUR on their list.

These guys (whoever they are) have the Portland area as number THREE on their list.

Food & Wine has Portland at number THREE.

I could go on.

Look, we get it. You don't like Portland. But getting somewhere in the vicinity of popular opinion might make your opinions a bit more believablity.
