here we pay like $20 or so every quarter.

I just called to get service switched on in my name for our rental in Beaverton and its 21 per month for 35gal and 34 per month for 64gal

I think here in AZ they give us 96 gal containers.

LOL were going to have to start burning our trash and composting as much as we can ;p

..speaking of which, do i call city of Beaverton to inquire about a free compost bin? or do they provide them free like they do here in az? the waste management company said they only provide yard waste bin and no compost bin.

Beaverton does not provide composters. You can purchase them from the Metro Paint Recycling Center (great place to get cheap, if limited color, paints) for $39.

Personally, we compost enough that I use wood pallets to create three composting bins. When one gets full I move on to the next. Since we throw in a lot of yard debris, there isn't a lot of smell from it. In early spring I start robbing the oldest one for dirt, and just screen the bigger pieces into the newest one.

Yeah, I was a little taken aback by the price of trash removal here when we moved here from Ohio last year. In Ohio, I had my selection of no fewer than two dozen companies, and had a great one for $13/month that would take five giant trash containers each week. Now we pay $36.90/month and only have one option, Waste Management, here in Clackamas. It took some getting used to having to sort your waste, but now I kind of like having the four different bins.

I can't even fathom what PDX pays, especially now that Sammy halved the pickups AND increased the prices.

Why were prices increased?

We pay about $30/month for the small size garbage can, plus recycling and yard debris/compost in Portland. Prices haven't gone up for us.

The water bill on the other hand...

That's because the Portland Metro area's trash dump is in Arlington Washington. Most the local ones have been closed for years.

To many NIMBYs

Ha, we actually pay less than you do. I think my trash is $28/month.
Want to take any other digs at Portland?

If you compost and set aside re-cyclables sharing service with a neighbor is very do-able.

Some of my neighbors share service, and I've thought about it as well. Actually, our neighbors right next to us don't have garbage collection at all, they haul all of their garbage to Metro in their truck. I sometimes wonder if they're actually saving that way...I've never asked.

davemess, I think our collection is actually around $28 a month too, even though I rounded up to $30 in my last post.

I'm actually pretty happy that the enormous amount of yard debris we accumulate in the spring, summer and fall is now picked up every week. We have a LOT of shrubs that get pruned throughout the year, plus the never ending battle of the neighbor's ivy that grows over our fence. It makes a lot more sense to have yard debris pickup more often than garbage for my household.
