Cool Hillsboro

Hillsboro (which someone had asked about recently, comparing it to FOLSOME, CA [!!!]) was just mentioned in US News and World Reports as one of the top ten places in the US for retirees. And, the housing prices seem reasonable even ! They did mention the rain, but we all knew that already .

I'd like to hear the Portlanders view on Hillsboro also. I heard more negative things about it than say, Beaverton or Tigard, and I believe it is still further out - past Beaverton, though I also believe public transportation is available to downtown.

It's a place you should look at and decide for yourself.

Default Also Looking at Hillsboro

Nancy, We always seem to be checking out the same areas! I hadn't seen this article, but will definitely go look it up.

Hillsboro is at the western end of the MAX line. I've heard that compared to the other communities on the western MAX line, that Hillsboro is the best. If anyone reading this lives in that area, is this correct? We've parked in Hillsboro and taken the MAX into downtown and from what we saw it looked like a safe area.

I am not overly fond of Hillsboro. Some of the residential areas on the east side (being general as I didn't have a compass) are kind of run down. Reminded me a lot of Rockwood. The downtown areas are much nicer and I am guessing a lot more expensive. Newberg has a similar "downtown" and I didnt notice as much "blight" for lack of a better word. Newburg is not on a Max line however, which might explain a few things.

I just moved from Hillsboro to downtown Portland.
I used to live in the Orenco Station area of Hillsboro. That is a very nice newer area. It is close to shopping, MAX stop, grocery, banks, etc...

Welcome to Orenco Station!

Orenco Station is on the East end of Hillsboro and borders Beaverton.

If you go west, a bit, there are a lot of apartments and Latino residents and many many good Mexican restaurants. It looks a little run down, but it is quite safe. Go west a bit more and you hit downtown Hillsboro, many cute houses in that area plus book shops, farmer markets, restaurants, courthouse, civic center. I liked Hillsboro, it's a nice quiet town.

I have lived about a mile west of the Hillsboro airport for a little over 3 years. I walk around the downtown area every morning and always feel safe. I work in Portland, but chose to buy a house in Hillsboro, because it is much more inexpensive and is a reasonable commute.
