century636 is on a distinguished road
I've lived in Portland and Clackamas and regret moving here. The weather is fine, some neat things in Portland (but not enuff), but it's too boring, industry is leaving, the people are snobby, not to mention not enuff people know English. Some don't beleive me when I say I picked up girlfriends while on vacation in The Bay, Ontario, and Nevada in days, not months. Even in Vancouver, it's a little better. I don't like it here.

Yes I am. But I haven't yet found a city I want to live in. I have a couple in mind but have not had the time to check them out.

I have never been to Portland so I can't say for sure ( I am planning to move there in the spring ) , but I can not believe that not enough people know English here.....nor can I imagine that the people are "snobby".

almost everyone here speaks English. Most are also friendly. And if you find Portland, and the surrounding area boring, then Id agree, you should move. There is so much to do in and around Portland. Museums, outdoor markets, hiking, fishing, art shows, festivals, drama groups, up and coming musicians, and the orchastra. You can spend the day at the zoo, the rose gardens, the japanese gardens, the forestry center, theres much to do around here, if you just go out to it. Of course, if your looking for New York,San Diego, Austin, Tampa or wherever, youre not going to find it in Portland. Obviously.
And as for going to all these different places to "pick up" a ......"girlfriend"... in "days"......well, maybe the girls here in Oregon are a bit more, well, selective. Possibly wanting to get to know someone over time rather than being "picked up" in a matter of "days"
just a thought.
Nancy, I hope you dont let the negative posts frighten you off. Portland is a beautiful city. Its sure gonna be different then your New York, but you seem like a smart lady, Im sure you're quite aware of that. Its not paradise, but theres an awful lot of people living here that are quite happy to call Portland home. If it were as bad as some of these posts lead one to believe, Portland, and most of Oregon, would be a violent wasteland. The few people that still chose to live here, shooting each other in our mean, drug-crazed poverty frenzy.
most of us Oregonians are a bit more peaceful/friendly than that.
cant wait til your here and how YOUR experience will be.
Tiffany

Hey, I lived in portland and in other areas of oregon for 27 years and now I am in the seattle area. That is really not totally true. Maybe, in some areas but not the majority. If that is your issue with portland, then come to seattle. They have portland beat hands down for snobby people and sometimes I feel like I am in another country as their is alot of nonenglish speaking people here.

Word of warning---if money is a big issue and you can not afford Portland, then do not pick Seattle or Santa Fe. Try the midwest or the south. I have heard that NC is very nice. Also, lived in the midwest and it is way cheaper. Check out city-data stats and you will get the info. I am now in the Seattle area and in a few years will move as I will retire and can not live here anylonger.

Glad to be of help. These doom and gloom posters drive me batty. Sure, its not all sunshine and bluebirds here, not everyones a PollyAnna, but ugh, who'd want that anyhow? lol We definatly have our share of grumps, dumps, and dredges of sociaty, but they're sure not our majority. And hopefully, those that hate living here so much, can find a new home somewhere else that might make them happier.
For the rest of us, Yeeaeahhhhhhhh....
