I'm not sure what types of jobs everyone is refering to when you say the economy is bad. I've been searching the job boards daily for Engineering/Manufacturing jobs for sometime now and I can tell you that Portland has a lot more job openings for those types of jobs than they do in So Cal where many of the large companies are moving off shore or out of state.

I believe engineering jobs are always in demand. Too bad the companies are leaving CA. I know you have a better chance of getting into Canada if you have a degree in engineering.

It depends on what field of engineering. My husband is a chemical engineer. Portland Oregon is NOT THE PLACE for any chemical engineering.

My husband is a Manufacturing Engineer. There seem to be alot of jobs in that field in Portland. Many have been re-posted several times over the many months we have been looking so either my husband is over qualified, in his early 50's (so too old) or they just ignore the resumes from out of state.

I'm an engineer and planning to move to Portland with my family next June. My wife was visiting Portland last week and brought back the Sunday paper. I went through the classifieds section for new jobs. I don't need one even after moving but I wanted to get a feel of what is out there in Portland. There are some jobs advertised but the selection is fairly low when compared to Austin for example. In my field, most of the advertised jobs are entry level. But very very few jobs :-(

Most cities don't really have much in the way of job postings on craigslist, but in portland you can get a good representative view of what's out there on it. Moreso than the paper I think. Or try careerbuilder or monster.

Sounds like a good idea. I didn't think of Craigslist to check the job openings. I just checked Craigslist and got a lot better list. I do feel better ... Thanks!

It goes the other way too... I check craigslist for other cities I'm interested in and get depressed! Then I realize they probably just don't use it there.

Our son is a software engineer and found his job through a professional headhunter firm called Meridian (sp?). Apparently, most of the larger corporations use those means of hiring more than newpaper and internet listings.

Here we go again, ocho. My son is in the same business & is living in Boston (but lived in SF) and has been looking for a job. He does have a temporary one. I wonder if he has heard of this Meridian place. I know he is aware of Craig's List, but I will tell him about this. Thanks !!!
