Default Tolerance, mostly ;-)

Oregonians in general are relaxed, friendly, unpretentious folks.

Historically, the whole state has been overwhelmingly white, but the demographics have changed, are changing, and will continue to change. When I moved here from LA 30 years ago, I was struck by how much less diverse Oregon seemed than So Cal, but the differences are much less dramatic today.

The most tolerant places to live are (arguably) urban downtowns —in Oregon, that would be Portland, and suburbs like Oregon City fall under its influence to some degree. In that sense, any of Portland's satellites communities are likely to be equally welcoming. The farther out you get in rural Oregon... maybe not so much.

Oregon City is the oldest incorporated town west of the Rockies, with quite a large historic district and lots of gorgeous old homes. Most of its residents (at a guess) are middle-class or blue-collar. Real estate tends to be a bit more affordable, although you can spend a couple mill if you really want to. We seem not to be able to support high-end restaurants, but there is an active little arts community and, of course, the college.

People are welcome to send recommendations via DM, but City-Data doesn't permit real estate recommendations in the forums.

Default Two late...but, my .02cents

So sorry i hadn't seen this sooner. My husband and I live in Oregon City and have for the last three years and we love it. My husband is Mexican, I am Caucasian and my daughter is mixed but looks more middle eastern than hispanic.

We love Oregon City and have no issues with acceptance in any way. There are other parts of Oregon that I had a different experience and was worried myself when moving to Oregon from California in 1996. I was worried about some of the same things you are...but, found things are fine. Was mainly worried about my daughter fitting in. Turns out it was a non-issue and she made friends quickly, completed middle school, high school and just finished her Master's Degree.

Would be interested to hear if you made the move and where you ended up living.

Happy Holidays!
