Others have summed up the mountain biking situation in Portland pretty well, but I'll throw my 2c in. Portland isn't a place where there's tons of good single track for quick after work rides, especially during winter when the days are shorter and wetter. Many mt. bikers pick up road riding or cyclocross in order to get more riding in.

However, if you're willing to drive an hour or more, there are tons of options in Oregon. In about an hour's drive there's singletrack in the gorge and near Mt. Hood, and also just west of Portland in the Tillamook forest. In a little over two hours you can get to the McKenzie River trail (only open in summer) and other Eugene area trails, or Oakridge where there are lots of good trails. In three-ish hours you can be in Bend. If you don't know about Bend, look it up

So, what Portland lacks in mountain biking, the rest of the state makes up for. It just takes a little effort and transportation.

As others have said this is a sore subject in Portland. There are trails but you will drive an hour to almost all of them. It makes it hard to ride daily off road. We do have great trails that are rideable in summer and fall so it is great, but they are not in the city. This is a great little site: Hood River Mountain Biking

Also, remember when you do get here, do not sign up with any of those BARK people. They prowel outsite REI and other places where outdoor people tend to go. They hate mountain bikers and are trying to basically block any access to Mt Hood, except watching it from some deck here in Portland.
