Portland Tribune and Community Newspapers - Elephants pack trunks for Roslyn Lake

I wonder what the animals rights activists are objecting to. I would like to hear their side of the story. I wish the Tribune had said what it was.

The article did mention that the zoo was going to ask for a partnership for this endeavor. I wonder what that will involve.

Wow, is this ever heading for a topic change and a sure crash.

I guess the two are connected, maybe a new thread on how the city should spend money?

I for one approve of expanding the program that has gained Oregon and Portland national recognition. Although I do think it should be self supporting and have no taxpayer funds spent in hard times while streets deteriorate.

Doesn't the Zoo get a large chunk of money from the state now? That is why they changed the name if I recollect rightly.

I think it is still a City Zoo. I don't really know, but I know OMSI became city museum after I left there. It used to be a 501 (C).

The zoo's 2011 annual operating budget is derived from a tax base through Metro, the Portland-area regional government that is the zoo's governing body, plus zoo admissions, concessions, contributions, special promotions, the Oregon Zoo Foundation and grants.

I agree about the taxpayer issue. But in the papers, it's the elephant issue that's evolving into the tax issue as well.

Sorry, but one elephant does not make a zoo.
