Of course I may feel differently by May or June! I have always loved spring, and since we moved here in April I know that spring in Portland is much different than spring in Northern California. I did enjoy all of the wonderful flowers, and I am looking forward to seeing them again.

I've been taking 5,000IU of Vitamin D daily for a little over a month and I'm still going to bed early and sleeping in. How long does the loading stage take? I've been here since October, came from New England. I found a good hiking trail in nearby Molalla, so I get out occasionally. It doesn't bother me so much now, but there were a few days for me personally where the thought of no sun in the foreseeable future drained me. Lately I'm coming to accept the weather for what it is: Outside of our control. Sorry, realty marketers.

PS: Natives' attitudes towards snow and ice crack me up more than they should. I try to blend in, but I can't help point out that it's been snowing back east since October when people complain about cold temperatures. I like the snow, but I love that it doesn't stay cold long enough for it to stick around.

we were both wondering if this was an unusually sunny winter so far
In my experience, this is very typical of late December / early January.
Cold, clear, and windy.

I kinda think it is. The other day one of the weather forecasters on TV asked. "Is this Portland I am giving my forecast for? Are you sure?"

Actually, we often do have breaks like this in February so maybe we are just getting it early.

Not enough rain, but I'm getting used to it.

Thank goodness for the sun yesterday and today! I am definitely needing more sleep this month.

The next few months are the worst part of the year for me and I have lived here all my life.
I already have very early case of spring fever.
But I've been blessed with an extraordinary patience, so I can handle it.

How's it going for you?
Don't worry it gets better slowly.
The days will slowly get longer and it will get a little warmer.

Random Tips:

Don't fall for the "false spring" we usually get in late February early March.

Watch for Robins. When they show up en masse, you will know better weather is a'comin'.

Wait until May to plant your tomatoes and go to a good nursery and buy the biggest plants you can find.

If you are doing the stereotypical newcomer thing of "enjoying a good book with a cup of soup by the fire while listening to the gentle pitter-patter of falling rain", you are now probably sarting to think it's getting old, even though it hasn't really rained in a while.
You Probably didn't notice it, but I'll bet you are going to bed a little bit earlier each night and sleeping late when you can.
Those are signs of a Vitamin D deficiancy. Take some, and get outside. Go for a hike or trout fishing or something.
That will do you more good than anything.

Long time Portlanders, feel free to add some more tips on how you deal with this time of year.

Spring is still a good three months away. Good Luck!

I'm under the impression that this season is less rainy than usual.

It seems to me that it's less rainy then it was 5-6 years ago. But if we go back 15-20 years it seems about the same.

Aren't we in another El Nino season?

The next step to becoming an Oregonian is to start telling your freinds, relatives, and anybody else who asks that that all it does is rain here. Non-stop. Miserable.
