The 10-5 route is the best. When you get near Oregon TripCheck.com is your friend. I have tripcheck.com at the top of my favorites. Oregon has a very good live road camera network.

Just stick to freeways and you will be fine. Take it slow on the downgrades.

Indeed. Particularly the downgrade south of Ashland.

Yep. Lower gear is a must. Only real hill on the whole route.

Thanks a lot ya'll. Heading out on Wed. or Thurs. Definitely goin through CA...what I've decided on 101 vs. I-5 is to wait till I get to where I have to make the decision on which way to go and then check the weather.

One more vote for the I-10 to I-5 Route. I have driven into Oregon from Texas about every way you can. Just check the weather at the pass coming into Oregon from the South. All the other routes put you into more risk of ice and snowy conditions.

Good luck on the journey!

I am telling you that will be a mistake. I have driven both routes, under all conditions, in all seasons, dozens of times. You do not know what you are getting into on the 101 route. I do. Don't do it.

I love the route, you will not, and it adds a day.

Gotcha Steve, thanks for the guidance.

To clarify my previous post to tell you what I'm thinking: As of this moment, I'm going the I-5 route, especially after reading all the comments and watching a couple of youtube videos and seeing how well kept I-5 is in the winter. What I'm going to do though is check the weather carefully before I make the final I-5 vs. 101 decision...although a couple of people have already noted here that the weather looks all good. Another mark against 101 is that it's much, much longer of a drive, and still with winding roads. I'd rather take it slow along I-5, navigating those couple of steep grades, and have a shorter drive mile-wise

Though I wouldn't want to be driving up there in the worst case scenario: in a blizzard, using snow chains and driving in the snow for the first time while pulling a trailer; which is why I'm going to make sure to stop and check the weather while in the Bay Area before I head up to Southern OR.

If I don't post before I leave in the next couple of days, I'll report back and let you know how it went!

I moved back to Portland in nov. It was before the snow and I drove from Athens Texas . Up to Denver to Boise to Portland is 2450 miles. I35 to i40 to i5 is about 2600 miles . I10 to i5 is about 2800 miles. It took me four days of 550 about a day. I had a 26 foot truck and trailer. California is 55 for trailer and they love to ticket you so watch out
