Exclamation A Couple Of Questions

Right now me and my boyfriend are staying in orange county california. we can only be here until june of next year though. hes 21 and im 20. we dont have any college or trade school experiance. we cant afford rent in california. were saving enought money for atleast 2 months of rent and living before me go but...

why does everyone keep saying rent is like 1000 dollars in portland but when i go on for rent or apartment search websites i find 1 bedrooms for under 700?

what is it about portland thats so expensive, i mean, theres no taxes right? and it cant be more expensive than california could it?

we want to be able to live without too much stress, have money to save and be able to pursue our intrest. is this possiable here?

is there any certain jobs that are in demand there?

thats all for now..thanks for any help

I do not live in Portland, so I can only answer your questions in a general sense.

According Oldintype and several others on this forum, you can find apt rentals for around $700 as long as you are not living in the city. Most neighborhoods around the city have apt rental prices that are fairly affordable.

There is no SALES tax in Portland (and I believe Oregon in general), but there are still taxes. But Oregon in general is cheaper than California, and Portland is cheaper than the large California cities.

Actually you can live IN the city for less than $700, you just might have a harder time finding something for that price range in the most popular neighborhoods.
