...but I don't. Right now there are trees all over the city blossoming in pink flowers. Are they cherry tress, like in Washington D.C.? Anybody know what they are? I feel like an idiot that I don't know after all these years.

Probably, particularly along Waterfront Park. There were a group of cherry trees right next to I-5 southbound, before it crosses the Willamette at the south end of town. On my way to Portland State University, those were my very first indicators of spring. Some of the plums (related to cherries) also bloom with small pink flowers.

Mostly Flowering Cherry, not fruiting.

There are also Flowering Plum and Flowering Almond, that do not produce fruit.

And I just found out many of the profuse tiny white blossomed trees are Flowering Pear.

There is a very good chance that they are flowering crab apples. If they are public plantings, the crab apples are more resistant to the wet weather and keep their blooms longer.

Flowers on the different varieties can be all shades of pink from white to red.

Seems like they also planted some Cornus kousa/Chinese dogwood trees in the Pearl district recently. Those are the ones with small white flowers and edible reddish berries.
