I have a friend who works at Vigor and she lives in Hollywood in NE and takes the bus. Having done a couple of small jobs out there, it seems a lot of the workers take the bus. There are quite a few buses that go to Swan Island as well as some that go to U of P and the people take the trail down the bluff. I would look at the bus schedules and see where they go.

Were I you I would see if the City of Portland Water Bureau (or whatever they call it these days) has positions you would qualify for. We don't have many steam operated heating systems in the metro area but someone maintains our building boiler.

Franky shipyard work rarely lasts long enough in Portland to bet your mortgage on it. Bremerton has a busy Navy shipyard and housing is much less expensive in that town, I really recommend you look there. The Navy shipyard at Vallejo was closed years ago so Bremerton is the go-to place for the Navy - even subs who hit rocks in Guam.

There is a shipyard in Seattle on Harbor Island as well. FWIW I have been a passenger on those WA ferries many times. Odd that Vigor has a picture of the 144 car ferry on the 64 car ferry discussion. The only recenty constructed WA ferries are the two that make the Seattle-Bainbridge Island run. All the others are really aged but (IMHO) WA is doing what they usually do.. waiting until they have no other choice but fix stuff. I think the CG treatened to pull the certificate on at least one in the last couple years.

If you were my kid I would tell you to target the Bremerton shipyard in terms of cost of living & wages.
