We are a mid-twenties couple who are relocating to Portland near the end of may. I am an RN and have accepted a position at Mirabella in the South Waterfront area. We are looking for a cheap but decent area to live in the SE/SW neighborhoods. Some of the things we love are craft beer, food, entertainment and music. We don't have children or pets and we will be bringing one vehicle. Just looking for a hip area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

look in SE Portland, especially around the Belmont/Hawthorne areas from 39th (Cesar E Chavez Blvd.) and closer-in to downtown. That's the best place in Portland.

What do you consider "cheap"? Are you looking to rent (and, if so, a house or an apartment?) or buy?

Just exactly what do you consider cheap? Will the Mirabella charge you for parking? The reason I ask is that if you must pay to park at work locating where you can walk, bike, or take the NS Streetcar, can be added to your housing budget. Add the John's Landing neighborhood to your list.

More affordable housing in SE. Hawthorne district is a great place to live for the money and laid back atmosphere, as another poster stated. Good luck and welcome!

I agree with Nell. You should check out the John's Landing area. Another possibility might be the Collins View neighborhood (just a little further from John's Landing). You wouldn't be too far from the South Waterfront area and could easily bike down there.

You could also consider Hillsdale.
