Fry's is not exactly "buying local." At least according to the traditional meaning of that phrase. But then, with electronics it's hard to stay 100% true.

I can only get on one page of Fry's before my computer freezes. If it moves, my computer dies which is one of its many problems. Here is what I think I will do. I have had someone this morning, not an unknown person from Angies List, who is actually in the tech biz who offered to come over and assess the situation and make a recommendation.

I will be going with that. I am going to pay attention to all your suggestions because now I have an idea of what is out there so they are really helpful. I was clueless before this having had my old computer for so long a time. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

If you decide you are just going to order a laptop online, I can surely point you in a better direction than that toshiba, the specs on this one are much better for a better price:

ASUS X75A-DS51 17.3" Notebook Computer (Black) X75A-DS51

I order from B&H Photo all the time, they're very reputable, and Asus is just a much more credible brand for computer hardware (though particularly motherboards) IMHO.

I think Fry's is slightly excessive, especially since you don't drive. I'm fairly sure you could get something you can use at a reasonable price from Best Buy much closer, which will help if in a worse case scenario you just hate it and want to take it back. If you were building your own desktop, though, Fry's would be the only viable option for a good price and selection outside of ordering online.

If that guy doesn't figure your issues out and you still need help, shoot me a message, I think we both live in the sunnyside neighborhood (remember us talking about Hawthorne Fred's) - maybe you just have a software issue and need a clean install of Windows... I help you with that some afternoon.

Thank you for the offer. I am going to make an appointment with someone for either this afternoon or tomorrow. Hopefully we can come to a decision. I remember the Fred's conversation.

For computer fixes, repairs and high-quality advice I enthusiastically recommend a fellow named Adrian (sorry, I don't know his last name). His shop is Bridgetown Electronic Repair at 5020 SE Division St (971) 266-1177. Adrian is everything you want in a problem-solver for your computer: knowledgable, efficient, available, accommodating, flexible, and better than reasonable on price. In fact, he has helped me repeatedly with some problems he considered small but which were huge for me and wouldn't let me pay him. I want to help him out and help you find him but I don't want to send people there expecting free rides. The prices at my favorite restaurant in NYC were too low and when that (inevitable) big rent increase came they couldn't adjust and went under, so it can definitely happen -- which is why I'm a little nervous about mentioning those freebies. Anyway, he's a crackerjack computer-fixer and a pleasure to deal with. One caveat: sometimes his place looks closed when it isn't because he likes to work in natural light. He's a solo act, so play it safe and call first.
