We are experiencing our fourth Portland Summer and we just have a movable air conditioner. Right now the family is camping in our family room basement which stays below 70 and a fan works just fine. Central air just seems to be unnecessary for such short periods of hot weather. Will purchase another AC unit however.

Yes! I decided today this is the last summer I will go without. I like to be comfortable and these humid heat waves with no escape are to me just miserable.

I always hated the hot humid long summers in Chicago. When I moved to Portland back in the 70's I found I could handle the dry summer heat for the short length of time it was here. But the summers here have been getting more and more humid and while not as bad as Chicago it's still bad enough that if I can find an air conditioner that would work for my living room I may get one. As I mentioned, I would prefer it for the bedroom if I could find one small enough for the windows I have there.

I just heard the weather report. They said it was 76 degrees and humid and that people who didn't have AC would be uncomfortable indoors. He wasn't kidding about that. It should get better through the night though. Another possible 90 degree day tomorrow and more humidity and then maybe a cool down beginning Wednesday or Thursday. I think it depends upon which weather report you are listening to.

But there is no doubt about it, AC is definitely a good thing for those of us who don't like the heat.

Most definitely! I plan to get a standing one. I like the idea of being able to move it around and not taking up any window space.

We got a portable one but it still takes up window space - you have to vent the thing out the window.

I know it's an old topic, but are any Oregonians getting AC this year? I'm not sure if it's going to be a scorcher or a non-summer. May and June are always schizo.

We have central air and we usually run it less than 10 days a year.

Its just not that hot here.

I like to have one whether its just for a few days a month or one of the infrequent two or three week hot spells we can have. Groupon has some portable LG models just offered today (5/20) from $199.99 if you think you may need one.

We have central air, but like dom says there are only about 10 (closer to 20 for me) days per year you can't just open the windows. We actually have a portable LG 10000 BTU from HD for $320 ,for our bedroom because most of those warm nights we just need to cool it off enough to sleep. My kids can sleep if hot no problem. Our central air is extremely inefficent. I would replace it but, it seems the cost vs reward ratio makes it not worth investing in. I gave an older portable away to a friend in an apartment with south facing windows, his place got seriously hot. 90* on a 75* day. Let that be a lesson, south big south facing picture windows make rooms super hot. Common sense? well apparently not.
