Humane Society investigating Portland Aquarium deaths | Statesman Journal | statesmanjournal.com

This is a joke right? A shark ate some fish. The crabs ate what ever they eat, more or less everything I think, and the SeaStars ate the crabs. Go figure. This is why although the Humane Society does some good things, I can not support them. Note the complaints were filed by disgruntled , I mean former, employees.

Now that I think about it, just what do you think they feed these critters ... I'll tell you ... Other aquarium animals or at least their close cousins.

It would be nice to see a comparison to other aquariums of it's size and type before establishing a quick knee jerk opinion.

This particular aquarium seems to have had it's troubles right from the start.

YELP reviews are hot and cold (and very interesting).
Portland Aquarium - Milwaukie, OR

IMHO, former (and current) employees are the people that would best know what goes on behind the scenes.

I have to wonder what they think of my wanton kill of half a dozen crabs last weekend at Newport and Coos Bay?

And then there is the two dozen oysters I liberated in Winchester Bay.

I hope you "liberated" those oysters from an oyster farm store?

IMO that place seemed shady before it even opened.

Actually they did a comparison in one of the articles where if it was adjusted for size they had 8% death and the Newport Aquarium had less than 1%. Personally if the vet quit over concerns about health of the animals I'd be more likely to believe the vet than someone up against charges in another state for trying to illegally buy animals.

****just realized the comparison is from the Oregonian which the Statesman article links to.

Well this is what happens when you turn a stripclub into an aquarium, it is probably going to be run by people who have no clue what they are doing. I would love to see a real aquarium in Portland, not this joke of a business that obviously has no clue how to run itself properly.

I didn't live here at the time of planning and opening and am curious why you say that?? What was going on?

none of the people involved in the aquarium are marine scientists - this was well known before it opened. they were selling memberships before it even opened. The number and variety of animal species says "Quantity" vs "Quality" to me.

I'm a biologist and have worked and volunteered in a few different quality marine science places. FWIW, I've never been to the Portland Aquarium but I'm not surprised to read that one of the brothers was arrested over obtaining animals illegally.
