Is vancouver a cool sister ?
How is Vancouver viewed in respect to Oregon ?
An uncool suburb, an excellent compliment to an eclectic city,
or a major pain due to the cross traffic ?
Do people tend to live in Vancouver and play in Portland ?
I recently spoke to two really nice people in Vancouver about
possible relocation, and the first thing both of them said was
so you want to live in Oregon. I found this cool that they would
adopt a city from WA.

For all practical purposes, Vancouver is a Portland suburb despite being in a different state. Portlanders are already accustomed to constantly driving over bridges to cross rivers, so being on the other side of the Columbia doesn't mean much.
Many years ago, Vancouver, WA had a reputation for being somewhat of a tax-shelter haven: you could live in Vancouver and not pay any state income tax, while shopping in Portland and paying no sales tax. Some even registered their cars in Oregon (which is illegal) to get the Oregon rate. I think that the State of Washington has probably figured a way to get to them by now, though.

Before Oregon became a state, Vancouver was considered as part of Oregon. (Oregon Territory, anyway.)
Sorry...I volunteered at Ft. Vancouver for too many years.... Yes, I know, I'm a geek...

Jealousy or just out of spite
OK I was born and raised in WA but have been living in OR for the past two years. The only reason we make fun of Vancouver, or the 'Couve as some OR natives call it is either out of jealousy that they pay less taxes, or just because we're just plain mean and have nothing better to say. People say Van WA has a crime reputation, but I think that's because that is the only thing that the Portland news stations report in Van WA is the murders. I think Omaha Nebraska and their cross river suburb of Council Bluffs Iowa go through the same thing.

The 'couve is considered more trashy and people that live there tend to bash Oregon while taking full advantage of our employers and shopping tax free. I personally would never live there!! I can usually spot a 'couve car 100 yards away... it is usually the beat up ghetto car......

I am living in Omaha right now and do agree...we're relocating to the northwest this summer and have mainly focused on Portland just for that reason.
I would be interested to learn more about Vancouver though. Is there an area there considered the 'safest' with great education, especially for a child w/ a disability???
I'd love any input!!!

You might check out Camas, WA. It is east of Vancouver.

Are there any plans to extend TRI-MET's yellow line over the river into Vancouver? Given Portland's reputation for smart development, I'm suprised they haven't done it already. With only two bridges, I would imagine the rush hour trip to Portland is pretty awful.
