I am interested in volunteering some time with local humane societies, shelters, or rescues. I am also considering the possibility of being a foster home (for pets.) I am currently registered for and awaiting the next volunteer orientation at the Oregon Humane Society. Does anyone here have experiences to share with any local organizations that might help me decide where to donate my time?

There are shelters all over the city and suburbs. Is there a particular area to which you prefer to go? For example there is the House of Dreams kitty shelter in Parkrose and the C.A.T. (Cat Adoption Team) in Sherwood and others in between.

I guess you can tell I am a cat person but I am sure there are also dog rescue and shelter organizations as well.

Check out the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon. They are an amazing organization that spays and neuters feral cats for low cost. They have lots of volunteer opportunities and really make you feel welcome.

If you prefer dogs, Pacific Pug Rescue might be a good one for fostering.

Thank you to all of you for the suggestions. I hadn't heard of any of them. Minervah, the SW area would be most convenient, so perhaps the C.A.T. would be worth looking into.

If you are interested in fostering dogs, you may want to check out Cascade Beagle Rescue. They are based out of Milwaukie, OR. I adopted a dog from there and find they're very active in getting dogs out of bad situations and getting them placed.

I volunteer with OHS. I like the fact that they provide you with support, such as veterinary care. I really wanted to volunteer for Clackamas Dog Services, as they need the help- but if a foster dog gets sick, you're responsible for the vet costs, and that's a lot to ask.

They really need people who will take kittens and small animals.

You can also go to Petfinder and type in your zip code for a list of shelters and rescues and contact info.
