This Zipcar thing is so novel to me and looks great on paper but am curious to hear whether its feasibility gets lost in translation.

That is, anyone care to share his or her experiences with Zipcar?

Reliable resource to put into the rotation of transportation options?

This forum has been invaluable, by the way.

Scott

I just opened a zipcar acct a few months ago and love it! I've only used it a handful of times and it has been very convenient. I love that gas and insurance are included in the rate. I find that zipcar works best for me when I only need it for an hour or two to run some quick errands in the 'burbs. If I need a car for a couple of days or need to drive long distances, I will rent a car (zipcar begins charging for gas if you exceed 180 miles/day).

I can only give a second hand anecdote, but my niece lives downtown and uses Zipcar often. I think she pays about $9/hr and usually uses it for two to three hour errand trips. She reserves it online and it's always in the same spot for pickup. Seems to work out well for her. For longer use needs, she borrows a car from a family member who lives in inner Southeast.

What a country (forgive the 1980s reference to Yakov Smirnoff).

Just amazing . . . and I am so grateful to hear that it seems to fill the void in those instances when someone just needs a car for a few hours.

Thank you for the responses!

One thing to note, my niece says that last minute reservations can sometime be tricky. A car might not be available where it's convenient for pickup. But if you plan ahead you should be fine.

I've been using Zipcar for the past 3 years & love it. The only time I use it is when I have to pick up large appliances like stoves & refrigerators for my tenants. I rent a Toyota Tacoma & only need it for 2 hours. In fact, I used one this past thursday and it cost me $21.35. It's easy to reserve online & if you find you're running late you can call them & add on time - if it's not already reserved. They have my cc on file & bill me through that. It also costs $50/year for the membership. Go for it. I'm able to live car free & really love it.

Fantastic!

I better buy stock before the business disappears.

I am visiting Portland right now, and started a zipcar membership so I could use the car to take side trips out to the coast and to the mountains. I love it, and have nothing but good things to say. I was surprised to find out how many cities actually have a zipcar or two. It's nice to know that the price you are quoted is the price you'll pay. There are no extras like gas and insurance to calculate into your expendatures.

Zipcar is handy but I sure miss Flexcar (which Zipcar bought out). Zipcar is not very customer friendly in comparison to Flexcar. I guess that's what happens when you're no longer dealing with a local company and instead a large corporation. But it definitely is a good program.

Just joined on a recommendation from my brother, who uses them to go Seattle-Portland frequently. Perfect for us because we don't carry insurance which can double the price at traditional rental lots. I live near the Lloyd Center and there are a dozen cars to pick from within under ten blocks from my place.
