I thought the person who posted was a realtor LOL
For me, I grew-up in Beaverton by Portland when the west suburb was rural.
Personally, I think Portland has a ton of fun things to do.
Notice in the opening post about traffic that it "can be" - that does not mean that its that way all day. I was just up there a week ago working for a week, and got around fine pulling a trailer each day from suburb to suburb, and even into Vancouver and Camas.
Love going to Powell's bookstore, the zoo, Japanese Garden, Chinese Garden, parks, OMSI, playing on huge soccer fields, watching the raceway.
I also enjoy doing lectures myself at the Yard Garden and Patio show, and shopping at those kinds of shows.
Small towns don't have that kind of thing, and if that's what people want, they will need a big city to get it. And Portland is one of the finer examples of a big city without being the size of a massive city. And few other big cities are surrounded by ocean, mountains and a huge river on both sides in close proximity.
Like I said, the opening reply sounds like a realtor drawing people away from Portland or Oregon

Your points about Portland show how boring this place really is. Powells is a used bookstore with books in it like every other city has. It might have more books than others but its still just a bookstore. Also the Japanese and rose gardens are fun for about 15 min. You stare at the trees and gardens and then you say ok Im bored its time to leave. Watching the raceway? I dont understand that. The raceway is open for maybe three months a year then the rain and cold comes and its closed. Also small towns dont have bookstores and gardens?

No one cares if you like it or not. Many find it perfect for them! You should find a place that suits you. I never get bored in the gardens. Sounds like you need a lot to keep you going. I suggest New York City.

You have to drive out to the coast or the mountains to get into the nice areas.
Absolutely! And the coast is the most beautiful in the country. How nice to have it so close.

Lilli,Remember Supernova from Las Vegas who did nothing but say negative things for attention ? Check out this posters other posts. Its a shame, sincere people on here really try to help. Others just try to get attention. The mods really have work cut out for them on here;shame some posters are so childish, or perhaps just lonely or mean. Others really try to answer seekers with honesty.

hi,
Of course, there are negatives and positives. Weather is taking a turn for the worse and is a big negative for me. If you only spend 15 minutes at the rose garden, you are missing out. There are a lot of free concerts and other events in the summer at the rose garden. The zoo has tons of concerts as well. In the Fall and Winter, there are not as many outdoor events. We use this time of the year to catch up on movies and the library's DVDs and books.
Powell is ok, it's fun to browse, but I haven't found a lot of used books.
There are a lot of homeless people, but they are generally pretty harmless.

Sounds like a case of familiarity breeding contempt. You just listed two of the reasons I'm looking forward to visiting -- and possibly moving to -- Portland: its love of books and nature. Those are two of my biggest passions. Sure, lots of towns have bookstores and gardens, but calling Powell's just another bookstore is kind of like calling the space shuttle just another airplane. My wife loves roses, and there aren't many better places to go for a rose lover. And even though you can find gardens in lots of places, the fact that Portland emphasizes nature and the green lifestyle makes it more special. It tells me that Portland will make -- and keep -- its nature areas all the more spectacular for its inhabitants. Sure, I could be wrong, but that's my impression. Oh, and I'm actually looking forward to the clouds and rain.
I live out here in metro DC, and I could say the same thing for all the stuff out here ... yeah, lots of monuments and touristy things to do, but I'm bored with it. Been there, done that. There are other reasons we're leaving than just being bored with the area, but the point remains the same: Maybe you just need a change of scenery!
