As I stated above, all anyone has to do is check someones past posts to see if there is ANY info worthwhile from a person or if all posts are spitting out venom or ugly negatives. Miserable people make miserable posts in the hopes of discouraging. No city is perfect, certainly not Portland, but how one presents "facts" for sincere information vs. mere venom to be ugly is easy to see in ones post history.

Oh, come on. This isn't so negative. It's just funny. It really is a beautiful bookstore. It really is. But, it's a bookstore. Don't you think?

If you're much of a reader, it's beyond being just a bookstore - Powells' has sections (history, economics, sci fi, mystery, literature) which are bigger than other entire stores. Plus Powell's is staffed by people who know their sections very well, something the chains don't can't offer. And beyond Powell's, Portland has one of the highest ratios of bookstores per resident in the country

Tattered Cover in Denver comes close to Powell's.

Dreary winter weather I'll conceded, but not my beloved Powell's....

besides, they used to have a really cool cat there. The cat was a great addition to a terrific book lovers paradise.
I used to go there and trade on books, loved doing that..... Powells even saved my butt a few times when i needed to sell some and they gave me a very fair price for them.
I could lose myself in there for hours on end. What a delightful way to spend a rainy day....

The cat was at Powell's Technical books, and he (she? it?) died recently. Alas, most of Portland has caught on to reselling books at Powell's and they are MUCH more selective about what they'll take and what they pay. In 1990, they took just about everything I brought and I got something like $800 out of the deal, which was enough to cover my expenses on a trip to Italy. At this move, they rejected about 8 of the 12 boxes and I think I got about $150.

Most of the Borders or Barnes and Nobles carry new or very popular books, but at Powell's you can browse new, old, used books and get a great selection. I read a lot of mystery and sci-fi and it irritates me to no end to go into a book store and see "the 3rd book in the series" without having the first two on the shelves - I don't want to dive into the middle, yet the chains rarely carry the older books. Powell's does.

here's background and details in Fup, the Powells cat.

Fup, the resident cat at Powell's Technical Books, passed away on October 25. She was 19 years old. She continued to greet her admiring public to the end, when her health failed and there was no choice but to put her to sleep. Her lifelong veterinarian made the trip out to the store to perform the task and Fup died peacefully at home with several of her longtime co-workers present.

Fup was born on or about June 30, 1988. She was adopted as a kitten by the Technical Store's first manager, so her exact birthdate is unknown and she was always quite coy about that. As for the origin of her name, legend has it that the manager's sister had a cat named Puff, so he sort of spelled that backwards. There was also a book titled Fup by Jim Dodge, published in 1983, which may have played into it as well.

When Powell's Technical Books moved to its present address in November 1990, Fup made the move as well. After clearing the building of any remaining mice, she claimed the store as her own. She showed little interest in the outside world, except to watch birds and falling leaves outside the window. She didn't care for toys, either — Fup took her position quite seriously. Except for the summer of 1997, when she was moved to an employee's apartment for about six weeks while the store was being remodeled, her rule was uninterrupted.

In her youth, Fup would sometimes climb ladders and hide at the top of book fixtures to look down upon the humans in her domain. Over the years, Fup acquired a well-earned reputation for biting employees who intruded on her time for more than about 30 seconds. However, she would always be sitting in front of the office to greet whoever came to open the store in the morning, demanding her serving of canned food for breakfast. She was more patient with visitors; Fup played the celebrity game well. She received many gifts and cards and emails from fans, which she appreciated.

In her later years, she mellowed out quite a bit and even became friendlier towards her co-workers, especially if they shared their lunches. Her favorite foods were canned tuna, chicken (especially Tandoori), and pulled pork. Cold cuts were also welcome.

There will not be a service; however, a memorial to be placed somewhere in the store is planned for a future date. Tributes can left in the comments section below.

In lieu of cards or flowers, we respectfully request you make a gift donation to the Oregon Humane Society in Fup's name."

Wonderful post, tiffany. Wow! What a great reference for a bookstore that seems so much more than just that .
