Actually, "Native Americans" immigrated here, too, if you want to get technical about it.

I remember that slogan from the 70's. In the early 70's, I moved for the summer to Corvallis from the dreaded California. My roommate and I had no trouble making a set of friends and we had a good time. The worst thing that happened was when I drove up there the first time, I got there in the middle of the night and took a wrong turn, so I did a u-turn in the middle of a deserted street. A cop immediately pulled me over, explained that wasn't a legal thing to do in OR and let me go with a warning since I was from out of state (CA). Not exactly unfriendly or nasty. He could have written me a ticket and slapped a fine on me. She stayed to go to school there and I returned to CA to go to school. It does seem to me that there are enough people from other places that one ought to be able to find them and start making friends.

I got pulled over for doing a u turn shortly after moving here from CA too! The cop let me go too! I guess it must be a very common thing for newcomers to do. I still can't figure out why it's illegal here.

Actually, Native Americans reffered to the Willamette Valley as, "The Valley of Sickness." Look it up.

Could it be because of the incredibly high pollen counts in the Willamette Valley?

I did. and most of the websites that weren't blogs all denounce it as a myth. The myth is that "Willamette" meant "Valley of Death." McArthur, who is the accepted authority on Oregon place names doesn't even mention it, and says it refers to the falls at Oregon City, and means "spillwater.

HAHA! All the people talking about how hard it is to make friends in Seattle and Portland, and the reasons they come up with apply to Minnesota EXACTLY! I believe the reasons for the stand-offish, phony "nice" behavior of the residents are: the Scandanavian or German influence, the small town mentality (Seattle, Portland, and Minneapolis are surrounded by small towns and suburbs), most natives are white, and most importantly THE FREAKIN WEATHER! It has been cloudy in MN for far too long this winter. It's getting erratic here in MN: cloudy, then sunny, two more days of cloudy, then rainy, then cloudy in the morning--sunny in the mid-afternoon--and even cloudier in the late afternoon--chilly evening, and now today it is dismally cloudy. Seriously, this weather is depressing, maybe that's why it attracted so many Scandanavians to these places in the first places.

MN weather is weird. It has two seasons: harsh, depressing winters and then BAM! it is summer from late May/early June until the end of October. Sheesh. I can't wait to get out of this state.

Coming from Cleveland, I'd have to say that if you want to see poor public schools, you might want to visit those first.

It's an attribute of the United States that they underfund their public schools, especially those within city boundaries, not of Portland.

Interesting, this thread was created by a person who specifically asked for negatives about Portland. Almost the first answer was countered by an argument. Then a comment that went something like those who feel so negatively about a place shouldn't live there. Others who responded to the question were also confronted with arguments about their negative opinions which I repeat were asked for. It's the title of the thread.

Debate was not called for. One specific question was asked. So why do people insist upon arguing with those who responded to this question?
