I haven't seen much on this topic yet so thought I'd ask.

Seems that getting away at least one time during the dark winter months to somewhere with some sun is a good idea and helps get one thru the winter gloom.

Where do you get away to and for how long? Is a weekend jaunt enough?

Thanks!

You can probably find some Sun on most mountains above 2000'. It's been sunny since 10AM here on the mountain...

Some days during the winter we won't have sun, but many days we do, during winter.

I actively avoid the sun. The amount we get here in Portland is just enough for me.

Back in the day, we went to Hawaii. Don't do that anymore. And don't (never did, really) feel the need to go elsewhere for sun. There are sufficient sunny days interspersed through the winters for me.

I've found that a monthly trip to the tanning salon feels great, wearing a bathing suit and feeling the warm, dry air. I know it may not be the healthiest activity but I figure that the bit of UV you would get from the occasional session is evened out by the lack we get from spending time outside.

I am not trying to be snarky or anything but I honestly think that if actually having to plan to leave the city even before you move here because it doesn't supply you with enough sun just might be a deterrent for moving here in the first place. It really isn't all that gloomy for people who live here all year round and don't mind the weather or they feel they must escape from it every year. I can see it's nice for a change every now and then for a vacation as a change of pace but feeling you would have to get away at least once during the winter months to me is a bit much.

In my case (and in my thinking), it's more a matter of it's just been preferable to vacation in the winter months, and that usually means somewhere sunny. During the summer, there's nowhere nicer to be than in Portland, so I haven't really wanted to leave town then.

I love winter. I am way more physically active with hiking and walking in Fall/Winter/Spring than the summer, which is supposed to be when people are active. I think if you're the type of person who holes up and hides during the winter months then you probably need to get away more often.

When my wife and I move back we will probably plan in the random San Diego trip from time to time in the winters.
