FYI: There is a nice market called Market of Choice that may be closer than Fred Meyer on Barbour.

At the south end of John's Landing, there's a Zupan's Market, which would be easily bikable from the South Waterfront - there's a nice bike path that runs along the river. It's not the cheapest place to by groceries, though. Nowhere in the downtown area really is.

And June through October, there's a Farmer's Market.

Glad to hear your visit was a positive one.

River Place, John's Landing, South Waterfront (last because amenities are in the infant stage) in that order IMHO. Zupan's is akin to Whole Foods. Fred Meyer at Barbur & Bertha Blvds is the best close supermarket overall, Safeway is OK and convenient.

So it almost seems like Pearl/Downtown/SouthWaterfront are my go to areas...The Whole Foods seems to be the most convenient.

I think I will visit in a few months and solidify an apartment on the next visit.

I got super super lucky btw and visited on a weekend that was incredibly sunny and beautiful!

I'm not a downtowner but that's fine if you are.

There are plenty of buses that go to OHSU from East of the river and the sooner in their route that you board the better your seat; as they get closer it may be standing room only.

You could easily live in Hawthorne district or elsewhere and take short ride to the hill.

New Seasons Market 1954 SE Division St and many other options are available.

You can do a short-term craigslist shared house room rental to learn the area better and wait to decide on longer term housing.

Whole Foods used to be my favorite, too, until I moved here! New Seasons is my favorite now, Trader Joe's always has great deals, Grocery Outlet, small independent markets, even Safeway is much better here. Just saying that if I were you I wouldn't base my choice of where to live solely on Whole Foods.

Mind if I ask why you are "not a downtowner"? Don't like the vibe?

Mind telling me more about the East of the River to OHSU transport routes? I don't mind standing for 20 minutes.

Just keep in mind ... yes, you have to grocery shop. But you don't have to do it every day. I'd keep in mind the easiest thing for my daily routine, personally.

Glad you had fun. You have several good options, so you can feel good about your future.

In case you didn't pick it up on your visit, Couch is pronounced Cooch. Also, it's Jeld-Wen not Jen-Weld. I had trouble with that for years myself.

We're in a drought--most of this winter has been pretty sunny and beautiful!
