They daffodils in my yard sprouted a few days ago--now they are about 3 inches out of the ground. I know they are among the first to sprout, but come on! It's JANUARY!

Do you think we're in for one of our early very long springs, or will my daffodils regret their early arrival?

You bring back a childhood memory.

When I was a child, growing up in Milwaukie ... one of my teacher's homes, halfway up Oatfield Hill had a flowerbed where she planted daffodils that spelled out "It's Spring." The first spotting of those blooms was always so exciting. It was a sad day when it stopped (I don't know if she moved away or died).

But yeah, it's kind of early ... though things do bloom much earlier here, anyway.

Depending on which variety of daffodils they are, this isn't unusual.

Daffodils need a certain amount of winter cold in order to sprout properly, and they certainly got that this year. They'll be okay even if we get our usual cold and clear week or so of Feb. weather where temps dip below freezing. You might want to cover them if it gets extremely cold.

My daffodils started pushing up in December but they're only about an inch or two high now. They've put on quite a burst of growth this past week. I have photos of daffodils in bloom in early March for 2011 and 2013 so they're only a week or two early. Mine are usually the latest in the neighborhood. I think they'll only regret it if we get a hard freeze in the next few weeks.

EMSWCD is starting pre-order of their native plants tomorrow for pick up mid February. I guess it's getting towards garden season again.

Our bulbs started sprouting last week. I'm not sure if they're daffodils or snowdrops; those two usually come up first, just ahead of the crocuses.

One of Mrs. NBP's New Year's Day rituals is to go on a daffodil hunt. Some are usually an inch or so out of the ground then.

I think we are in for the continuation of the driest spell on record. Nothing to rejoice about.

It is usually the Crocus first, but our Daffy's are shooting up early.
