Working parents can make sure that the kids are staying focused but frankly it helps if there are other adults in the family helping to see that it happens. Don't let the kids 'hang around' any where more than 10 minutes because they may be hustled by drug pushers (that can happen around ANY school). They need a purpose for how they spend their time out of the classroom - whether it is to participate in sports, speech/debate, language class, or engineering club. Make sure that they are doing what they claim to be doing. Teenagers are a lot of work, they take as much attention as toddlers IMHO. My once teenagers survived parental supervision but there were moments...

Adolescence makes the parting so much easier.

Aw, what a sad conclusion. I've heard others say it, but that doesn't make it any less sad.

Looking slightly further out, it looks like the one to beat is Lake Oswego.

West Linn has some of the best schools in the region.

Don't overlook Beaverton's Westview High School.

My rant about high school students is a reflection of what I see as some folks belief that all it takes is to enroll your child in a school with good test scores. Teachers and peers are very important, but more important is the leadership from the home. Not every child has that.
