Here is a more recent thread talking about race in Portland.

What are the most racist parts of Portland?

Portland is pretty liberal, and generally accepting of all people.

yes, there are generally daily lynchings of orange people. A few green folks have had crosses burned on their lawns.

There are literally 53 threads in the last two years posing the same exact question, albeit, in more detail.

portland oregon racist site:www.city-data.com

Put that in the ole' Google bar and hit the blue button with the magnifying glass. or you can just find the same question posed in a different way on page two of the Portland forum. Or..... on the front page about the Trader Joes. And yes, we are always this uptight, surly, and obtuse!

Hey we minorities have to do our homework... God forbid you're ever some place where you're the minority AND the people have a general distain for you for no other reason than your ethnicity.

The thing is, there are never any guarantees. You need to find people of your minority group and ask them what their experiences have been living in Portland. You cannot label an entire city one way or another. A city is made up of people and people are going be accepting or not. Someone can tell you that everything here is fine and you will be welcome no matter who you are or what you are and then you can run into some type of discrimination or bigotry when you get here. Or maybe that will never happen.

Maybe you should Google those of your ethnicity living in Portland and chat with them about their experiences or tell us what it is on this forum to see if there are any of the same who have had negative experiences because if it.

The reason I put generally in bold font and italicized it was to prevent comments such as this...I appreciate your response, but it is incorrect. From my own experiences, there are places in the US that are generally less accepting of minorities. I wasn't attempting to label an entire city of being anything. I know there's no city in the world where EVERYONE will accept me.

In the end it is simple. Come and visit Portland. If you like it here, Stay! and if you don't, Leave! People worry way to much about race and being accepted. I am sure there is a community that you will fit into. Live your life and dont worry what others think.
