I would look at Peacehealth for IT jobs in Vancouver. Or HP, or Sharp, or WaferTech, or any other of the many companies located in SW Washington. You just can't commute from Portland to Longview so that's out. You could from Ridgefield to Longview but Ridgefield to Portland would stink.

Look in Vancouver or Camas for It jobs, it's really the only way in my opinion you can make this work.

Thanks in advance

Vancouver has less crime than Portland by far. Not that it is crime free, but much safer. I live in Vancouver and work in Portland. The schools are good and unlike Portland, they all have good reputations.

As to the commute, it all depends on where you work and live. There is a light rail system and express buses from east Vancouver to downtown. I suggest, if possible, East Vancouver and use I-205 for your commute.

Also, housing and property taxes are substantially lower in Vancouver.

Blazer Prophet, can you tell us all about the light rail system from Vancouver to downtown? Who snuck that system across the Columbia while all those Clark County naysayers eyes were closed.

The 205 bridge is quite a bit better than the I-5 bridge right now, but you run the risk of delays on I-84 outbound as well as around the airport. It's still going to be 45 min+ most evenings from downtown Pdx to Cascade Park.

Not to mention that still puts the husband commuting over 50.

The ideal outcome (in this less than ideal scenario) would be for the OP to find employment somewhere around the I-5/205 juncture, like WSU-Vancouver or Adventist Med center. Then from Ridgefield you're talking about spouse commuting 30min and the OP commuting 10-15. 90 min a day total as compared to closer to 200. But I agree finding work north of the river is crucial. Otherwise that's a lot of added time and expense.

Alternatively find a job that let's you commute off-peak, or work from home at least part of the time.

I don't think you meant to indicate Vancouver had light rail between Vancouver and Portland but it sounded that way and you don't want to mislead the OP. But there are good express buses between Vancouver and Portland.
