Default Moving to Portland from Vegas, May 08

Hello to all that give their time to read and possibly comment. I am originally from Ca. Been in LV for the last 11 years. It's time to go back to culture, diversity, ma an pa stores, head shops, organics, treehuggers, recyclers, neighbors that actually speak to one another, bookstores that sell coffee with a comfy sitting area, gay friendly, main streets for locals to walk, shop and enjoy life. (not like the LV STRIP ) Oh yeah and good beer, I hear you have lots of it!
Where can I find all of that in Portland? Or am I asking for too much? I am a 30 something single female, my son is 17, my daughter is 14 were on our way to Portland in May 08. Weve never been there, but that's ok life is about experiences, right?
I am looking to rent a 3+ bedroom home or aprtment that is pet friendly (large black lab) in a clean (everyone keeps up their yards) safe neighborhood. I would love to be close to downtown, if your downtown is anything like living downtown in Long Beach Ca. Max rent would be $1200. I am a cosmo/food server and I plan to continue doing both when I arrive. Earning tips in Vegas pays the bills and then some.
It seems there are several small towns or neighborhoods within Portland. How small or large are they? How far apart are the many zip codes? I have done a lot or research on Oregon, looked at several maps but I am still confused. I would like to be in the middle of the action or just outside of it, if there is such a thing. I would need to be close to a high school that will allow my bi-racial teenagers to fit right in. While I do have a vehicle I adore, I hear public transportation and bike riding is a big thing there and that is exciting to me.
I am a completely non-judgemental individual who welcomes to each his own, I love and appreciate art, music, and the many different "scenes" that are out there. I am hoping to find a down to earth area where most people feel the way I do.
Thank you again to all that reply with any help whatsoever.

Christina
