Smile Music Scene in Portland, OR?

Hi, we are a 3-piece rock band from Delaware moving to the North West. Our influences are bands such as NOFX, Nirvana, Rage against the machine, etc.
We are wondering what the Music scene is like up in Portland and the surrounding area. Clubs, bars, shows, bands, etc.
Can anyone help?

The music scene in PDX is exceedingly active and varied. You can find just about anything for any taste. I have friends in several bands. All of which have lots of regular gigs even though their styles, talents, and appeal are completely different.

To get a good vibe of what's going on, it would be a good idea to read the Willamette Week's online edition found here. It's a free weekly paper that has a TON of information on local bands, who's playing where, the cover charges, how pricey the joint is and the type of food/beverages are served, the type of cliente, etc. It's a very good source of information for any music junkie new to the area. (Disclaimer: Being an indie paper means they're able to run a little fast and loose with some of their language. So it's more of an "adults only" type of newspaper.)

You also might want to check out the McMenamin's website, too. (Here.) They have some great places to catch bands whether they're up-and-comers or well established acts like Chris Isaak. (And they have some seriously great beers, too!) The White Eagle Saloon tends to get some really great local indie musicians in there on regular basis.

Good luck! One of my favorite aspects of Portland is the music scene.

The New York times had an entire article on the alternative music scene in Portland earlier this year. I don't have the link but you can search their site for it.

Speaking of the Portland music scene, I just heard a band from Oregon that I highly recommend. Amelia. I'm going to check them out live in Eugene later this month, as I love alternative groups like My Morning Jacket, Elliott Smith, etc. So I wanted to pass them along, and hope you enjoy!

Yup, that's one of the reasons why Portland interests me so much. So many of my favorite bands are based there or come from there. Indie music is to Portland as casinos are to Las Vegas.
