What a sorry elitist double standard we have here.
Thank you for proving out the stereotype.

So, I guess it can be said that Portland can be considered safe, but is not really that open minded.
Not upset or butthurt. Just making a statement of my own opinion. You know, the thing we're entitled to express.

Whenever anyone uses the term; "I am open minded." it is almost inevitably going to be proven the exact opposite. The more one expresses a love of diversity, the more they hate it.

Not opinion - 100% fact.

The outer regions of PDX are more representative of the Pac NW as a whole. More places in Oregon and Washington are like Gresham than they are like the Pearl.

Whenever says something is "100% fact", it's usually actually an opinion. This isn't my opinion though, it actually is 100% true...

I don't know--more and more I see increasing numbers of blacks(mostly moving from inner Portland due to gentrification) and East Asians along with Hispanics just east of 82nd these days(and Russians and other immigrant groups). I don't really see a lot of blacks and Asians in the rest of Oregon though you'll see Mexicans almost anywhere these days. Some parts on the edges of East Portland or Gresham still have a closer overall demographic to the rest of Oregon though it's changing as the metro changes overall. Though at this point Beaverton is actually the most diverse city(along with other parts of Washington County) in terms of ethnic demographics in the entire state.

Portland is chiefly apathetic. If you're fine with apathy, then whatever. You'll probably get some strange looks regardless, so don't come for the community because frankly there just isn't one. My advice is to find someplace cheap to live with opportunity for advancement somehow. Portland has had historically higher than average unemployment rates for a while so it's tough to get a foot in the door than other places.

Compare your opportunities for employment vs living wage. You want safety? Find a modest neighborhood and buy a gun/spray/whatever you see fit. Your personal safety is first YOUR responsibility - not a city's.

Oh I don't know... if the neighborhood is modest enough most people don't need guns... or spray, for safety. Just so you know. A gun is an offensive weapon, so is spray actually. The best way to use either is to shoot first. Don't even give the dirtbag a chance to think about hurting you. You might end up shooting the Pastor of a Seventh Day Adventist Church with a spotless criminal history. But better safe than sorry, right? You will wind up in jail, likely. But better that than have the gun be in your pocket when you finally get jumped. Its no good to you that way. It might even end up being used against you. Spray is probably a better choice. You will still go to jail for preemptively macing an upstanding member of the community but only for a few months vs. several years if you make the wrong call with lethal results. FWIW.
