I wish Las Vegas, NV and Portland, OR were like an hour drive from one another. That would be just awesome!

It is a short plane ride. Though you can get into a lot more trouble in Portland than Vegas, you just have to know where to look.

I like trouble, of the right kind. You're on to something there, and that's what I love about Portland.

I was born and raised in Vegas, graduated high school there and left for Utah when I was 19. All of my family lives there, most of which work or have retired from the casino business. I love going back home. The desert, the sun in the winter upon my skin, the over the top flashy casinos and the unmistakable sound of slot machines.

Then there are the homes. You won't find any crawl spaces or basements here. They're built on a slab, in one or two story varieties. Yes, just two choices. They're all stucco, with Spanish tile roofs, surrounded by a block wall separating the neighbors yard, and often a swimming pool in the rear yard. Yeah, there's that.

Then there's Portland. For me it's about the people, you guys know how to have fun. Argh! I'm torn.

I hate Las Vegas, but my mother-in-law lives there and we have the occasional required visit. We were just looking to plan one for Feb., but the plane tickets were going to be almost $800 for 2 people! Too far for an easy drive and Amtrak doesn't go there. Bleah.

Vegas does seem to be a love it or hate it city. It's too bad the cost of airfare hasn't dropped with the price of gas recently.

I just bought two round trip tickets for the end of February for a total of $360.

Presumably on Spirit Air, where they'll make you pay through the nose for the privilege of bringing anything larger than a purse onboard.

That, or one of those flights with a long layover- since we were planning on staying less than 24 hours, we didn't want to spend 7 hours (or 9, if you count getting to the airport early..) getting there.

Nope, Alaska Air, I have been waiting for the sweet spot time to pick up the tickets. Spirit Air is the devil of airlines that finds a fee for everything.

And no layover, both ways direct flights.

Nice. Yeah, after my last trip on Spirit I'm never doing that again.

Vegas flights are typically cheap, but that's still one heck of a bargain.
