Hi,

I currently live in a beautiful but pricy area on the central coast of CA. I am researching Portland and would appreciate hearing about the reality of finding a 1 BR apt or townhouse at which a small dog is permitted. Anyone have recent experience apt-hunting?

Thank you!

An apt. is technically possible, though how realistic is another question. Town home probably not. To some extent the answer depends on where in the metro you'd want to be - it's more feasible in Aloha than say, Alberta Arts or NW.

For the most part it's a tight market, so even though $900 1BRs exist, many won't take pets, or will charge "pet rent" (plus deposits) on top of the base rent. And you're hunting in a price range that has a high amount of demand, so even the listings that exist will tend to move fast if they're at all generally desirable (good condition, not too noisy, "walkable" close-in, etc.) and securing one is not a given even if you do see ads.

But I'd start with padmapper - set your desired rent/BR parameters and turn on the advanced option for "allows dogs." Also, keep in mind your utility costs are likely to run higher in PDX than CA central coast.

Thanks, bler144! I'll be visiting the area in two weeks and will jump at whatever I see that fits my criteria decently.

Sure, you should be able to find a 1 bedroom for that price depending on where you are looking. As for one that takes pets, that will limit your search a little and make it a little bit more challenging, but still doable.

You're welcome, I have a little dog and have had to do the apartment hunting here, and it was hard and required a lot of work on my part, but the work has always paid off.

People need their pets more than the perfect apartment. Good Luck!

portlandphi, I agree. As long as the pup and I are safe, I'll settle for the bare necessities.

In Milwaukie, it's definitely possible. Milwaukie is not super exciting, but it's safe, and not far from downtown and interesting parts of SE Portland. It does have a great library and farmer's market, and light rail opens in about 6 months.

This company seems to prey on dog owners-- http://irentpdx.com/available_rentals.php
They accept pets but inflate their prices a bit. Might be worth it though if you can't find a place.
