Hey everyone - first post here. I am planning a vacation to Portland & Seattle this summer (2015). Haven't made any definitive arrangements yet, but plan on doing so soon.

So, for those who either live in Portland and/or have traveled there recently, does anyone have any suggestions for relatively inexpensive hotels/motels in Portland?

Please note I will not be renting a car (don't want to deal with the hassle), so I'm specifically looking for something within walking distance to public transportation. Note I'm not looking for anything extremely high end, but I don't want to stay in any dumps and/or anyplace that's unsafe either....

I will also be posting this same thread in the Seattle section, so if anyone has any ideas for good hotels/motels in Seattle as well, please post here.

Thanks in advance for any info. on this!

Does it have to be in walking distance to a bowling alley?

There is a new Marriott Residence in The Pearl. Great location and maybe in your price range. Good luck!

I suggest you go on TripAdvisor and make a list of the places that interest you. Because few of us stay in hotels in our home town most of us can't comment on the appointments for a specific hotel but we can tell you if they are located close to the MAX, Streetcar or frequent bus line.

Airbnb.com

I've also stayed here http://m.yelp.com/biz/inn-at-northrup-station-portland
It is on the streetcar line and they often have specials/last minute deals too.

Again, appreciate all of the input - very helpful. Thanks for everyone who took the time to post. The Inn @ Northrup Station sounds great. Being on the transit line is extremely beneficial.

Thanks for The Big Lebowski references, everyone. Obviously, I'm a big fan of the film. In fact, it's one of my top ten favorite movies - and I've seen hundreds of films (huge movie fan). It's also my #1 favorite comedy, and I also think it's the Coen Brothers' best film. But, that's another thread...
