It's right across a bridge from Oregon but rural Oregon. Do you mean Portland or?

The economy is almost completely tourism based. I would not consider it all that great.

longbeach, washington. is located on the southwest corner of washington state....it is directly on the coast, second city up from the border....ilwaco,wa. is the only city lower than L.B......it is a great little town with a lot of pride,if that is what your looking for....if you are tired of the big city and you want a much, much lower cost of living, highly affordable home prices, very friendly people and excellent school system, come on down.....as alway's there is some trade offs....if you are looking for alot of traffic or graffiti or gangs,we don't have it....you can drive through this whole town, over and over and not find one bit of graffiti.....the school's are the reason i stayed.....i lived in the big city all my life and worked for the same company for 22 years before i got severed in 2000....my mother was retired here and told me to come for a visit and to see if i liked it.....i moved here and at first it seemed kinda quiet and slow, but very, very friendly so i stayed.....not a bad trade off from the big city.....if i had to put my finger on one thing that i could honestly say impressed me,it would have to be the school's.....when i moved here my oldest boy just finished 6th grade and in the big city i was dreading jr. high because that's when they usually start running in group's and you never know if their gonna be smart enough to choose the good group or the bad group.....we can only hope for the best,right.....in our old town my boy was a good kid pretty much....but in this town he really progressed and excelled academically and graduated high school last year without any trouble at school,whatsoever....i never got called by the school, not even once....he was captain of the band,he was on the marching band, concert band and pep band,too.... photographer for the year book,DJ for the high school and JR. high school and on the leadership counsel.....i am absolutely positive the teacher involvement here had everything to do with that.....if i'd have stayed in the big city it's quite possible i could've lost him to a gang or drugs or even a teen pregnancy.....that in itself is reason to consider a smaller town.....i would also like to add that unbeknownst to me and my wife,we realized that with the low cost of living and affordable housing it's gonna be very easy to retire here....the clean ocean air and friendly, friendly people make it very easy,too.....as far as job's go,if you don't like the job's here, some people drive 15 minutes and over the bridge, into astoria for a job more to their liking.....if you like fishing, this is the best fishing in the world(salmon, sturgeon, halibut, albacore tuna and rockfish).....![]() |

yes there are alot of family and kid activities.....because we get a good number of tourist's here, the chamber of commerce and the visitors beaureu sponsor a great number of activities all year long.....in the summer they have 2 kite festivals(one of which is the international kite festival),2 sandcastle competitions(huge sandcastles),labor day parade ,fourth of july fireworks on the beach(really, really big),razor clam digging on the beach, trout fishing derby for kids only, surf perch derby for the whole family, garlic festival(food),wine festival, lot's of art walk's(with wine tasting)saturday market all summer long may thru september, rod run to the end of the world(huge car show for dad in sept.),plus they have all the old fashioned carnival rides downtown for kid's all summer long(gas go-karts,gas bumper cars, electric bumper cars, bumper boats,merry-go-round,tea cups, ferris wheel and plenty of wee kiddie rides, too) also have numerous penny arcades and video game parlours for the boy's.....the pirate ships from the movie pirates of the caribbean come here 3-4 times a year and for a fee you can ride along with them out to the columbia river where they do a reenactment with cannons firing and the whole bit or for $2-$3 you can board and just check out the ship itself....on one of these visits the pirates perform on land for free for the kids and they even hand out eye patches and gold coins,etc.....and for dad the port of ilwaco is 4 miles south of longbeach with lots of charter fishing on big, safe 42 foot boats(salmon, sturgeon, halibut, albacore tuna and rockfish,too)....bike trails are in abundance,as are walking trails,too.....the best thing about these trails are the beautiful people you will meet along the way and all the wonderful conversation they are more than happy to share with you.....the fresh, ocean air is as intoxicating as the stories these kind people are share.....this is one place the kids won't be bugging to leave anytime soon.....there's something for everyone....longbeach is about 90 minutes from portland and that's doing the speed limit....and to answer your other question, yes there are plenty of sports for all the kid's....![]() Last edited by koolcrabber46; 01-13-2008 at 02:42 AM.. |
