I'm a 20's something male DJ looking to relocate from Chicago. Portland has been on my radar for a while. Do they have a decent underground dance music scene? Is there any demand for DJ's (deep house, techno, etc.)?

PS - despite Chicago's great music scene, I've found the nepotism, cliqueyness, and intense competition among DJs to be a huge turn off.

I don't often cite Portlandia, but there was that skit where Carrie and Fred end up being chased by everyone they know inviting them to come to their DJ night.

It was hyperbole somewhat but...I do know a fair number of Portland people who DJ even though I'm not directly in that scene.

I'd be somewhat surprised if you found the nepotism/cliquishness/competition to really be that much different.

Portland's scene is small. Although, if you get in you're probably good. My buddy was a DJ for a number of clubs, but has since moved to LA. When he comes back he has been able to pick up a gig here and there.

California has a huge scene, Seattle also. Portland is a little smaller so its small and there's hipsters.
