Default Young Neighboorhoods In Portland

Does anyone know the young neighboords/areas in downtown Portland? The only area I've heard about is the Pearl District. I'm looking for a place that has a young vibe and reasonably close walking distance to everything.

If you're looking for areas with a concentration of young people, you might want to expand your search beyond downtown. For example, while the Pearl does have many young people (mainly early 30's professionals), there are also many retirees and empty-nesters.

The inner-east side is where more of the young people of Portland actually live. Hosford-Abernathy (aka Hawthornre & Ladd's Addition), Concordia (Alberta), and Kerns (especially where 28th meets Burnside) are all areas with very high concentrations of apartments and young early 20's people. Also, the areas are all a short five minute drive into the city, or a quick bike ride.

Just an idea...

The Concordia (alberta) district is not where you want to be. Yes, Concordia U is there--lots of young people, but the neighborhood is crappy. I barely feel safe driving down Lombard in that area.

The Pearl is not your only option. NW in general is great! And the side streets and areas adjacent to NW 20-24th have some great options. There's lots of fun restaurants, clubs, shops, neat old buildings to live in, even a Trader Joe's. You'll have easy access downtown via the buses, trolley, and MAX. There's a FredMeyer within walking/biking distance across (Burnside or Broadway--I can never remember) from PGE park. Also, PSU is located nearby. You'll definately get your vibe in NW!

The Concordia area is currently seeing an influx of young/educated/creative types- many of these people have moved up from the hip areas of SE where good housing is tougher to come by. Great young vibe in a close-in neighborhood that is safe.

For a walkable neighborhood, look into living right off of Alberta where you could walk to everything.

If you're looking to live in a young neighborhood, you can't go wrong with NW Portland. There are lots of apartments to choose from, and there are restaurants and bars practically on every block. The streetcar connects you with downtown, and there's a Trader Joe's and Fred Meyer.

Yeah and all of the downtown neighborhoods are close to the Pearl, but they're not the Pearl!

It seems like a lot of young people live in NW Portland in the area around NW 21st and 23rd. On the Eastside, Belmont/Hawthorne/Division have a lot to offer in terms of cool things to walk to. Lots of hipsters if that's your thing.
