If you must move here, I would stick to renting until you get a better feel for this place. I wouldn't be surprised if after a year here you two start talking about moving to a better place because Portland is gonna be a disappointment.

All of this "kid-friendly" neighborhood talk makes me want to start my own thread. I want to know where are the LEAST KID-FRIENDLY areas that are not specifically dangerous, just crappy school district, not as many families, and no parks at all. That would be the perfect place to live. I really wish they could just say, ok, the breeders can have this 75% of the city, but the other 25% are child-free zones. Leave the brats at home! lol.

borntorun is right, did you see Tomorrowland? Or Lone Ranger? Basically, Portland is Lone Ranger in city form -- extremely disappointing and not worth the money.

The Beaverton schools were horrible when I was growing up there. They've just deteriorated even more. Those kids were boneheaded stupid. The boys really beat up on the girls. The teachers were awful. It was all about sports sports and being macho. Those people have grown up now but, they still don't want you to tell them what to do. You could be right and they should not throw that on the ground, but the point is you're telling them what to do and native Oregonians have a real problem with that.

Beaverton High School has always been incredibly ghetto, there's no doubt about that. At Jesuit, we thought of them as a total joke.

The feeder schools for BHS include some lower income areas and some higher income areas. I'm sure that if your dad could afford to send you to Jesuit you would look down your nose on most public schools.

I'm a Texan living in Eugene. Love it! Reminds me of Austin "back in the day". Regardless of where you land, I highly recommend renting first. Don't buy until you've found your spot. You'll understand what I mean when you get here. We bought our home in a nice area of Eugene for around $200K. Happy.

Portland is OK, to visit. Just MO. I wouldn't live there: traffic, $$, hipsters. If I was forced to live there, I'd find a tucked away place on the outskirts somewhere. Honestly I'd rather move back to Texas than live in Portland.
