Interesting... I think I know the building that you are talking about because my husband and I were looking at an apt to rent there. The building is pretty cool.
I would say Chinatown is a bit sketchy. I've walked through it many times but I was never alone. I wouldn't walk at night by myself and even with someone next to me, I am always eager to get out of that area. I think most are just harmless homeless people but with that comes some not so harmless folks. I have seen some drug deals and some people roaming around that looked like they were up to no good. I can think of better areas to live.... |

I'd move up/west a few blocks if you can afford it. Old town/Chinatown isnt bad...really anywhere in downtown/SW Portland feels safe enough to me, but west of Broadway would be more ideal and cleaner. Once you get to 12th or 13th you're in the high rent district.
