I don't feel safe there at night at all. Daytime is ok, but still slightly sketchy...

That puts you about smack dab in the middle of all the services for the homeless downtown. The building I think you're talking about is nice, but the general vicinity is a bit unpleasant. You'd be better off elsewhere downtown if you can find a different place.

Chinatown in NYC is not that safe at night either, but not too too terrible.

That definitely wouldn't be my first choice. There are some fun art openings in that area, but in terms of living I would choose something farther west (like NW 15th and higher if the Pearl is out of your price range).

I live in the Pearl District and for me to get to the nearest light rail station it is Old Town/Chinatown. I make this walk just before 6am and walk right thru chinatown and Old town, I am not thrilled with the area I walk thru but I found some streets that are not all that bad. Its only a 10 minute walk or so to the station if you walk fast, and believe me walking thru that area that early in the am, I am moving. I would not recommend that area for your move. Try further up into NW Portland.

The last time my husband I had lunch in Chinatown, we felt stressed walking two blocks back to our car. The area seemed really dicey even during the middle of the day. There were two police cruisers parked on a side street and we were glad they were there. I'd choose a different area in which to rent an apartment.

the china town here is tiny, its not high crime but its not very clean either and at various times in the area all the shelters and soup kitchens draw a lot of people.that whole areas patch with really nice mixed in with really grimy.other then that Portland doesn't really have much in the way of crime, petty stuff of course but i do a lot of traveling and i have yet to feel to uncomfortable, its like a huge version of mayberry.

The area is also referred to as Old Town, a traditional haunt of the homeless and the street people. What area are you looking at for employment? Maybe we can direct you elsewhere

I disagree. Having lived in NYC for almost 30 years, it looks too quiet there at night, but there aren't any of the scary looking people there like in Portland's Chinatown.
