Well, if you're coming in Mid-November the weather report might sort of decide which trip works for you(though so far this fall has been warm and dry for the most part). Though the Oregon Coast is actually cool during big storms, when huge waves crash on the beach.

I guess though it depends what you find more interesting, rugged and often stormy coastlines and little coastal towns(and the history of Astoria) or steep mountain scenery of the Cascades and waterfalls and the drier almost Mediterranean landscape of the Hood River area.

If you do go to the Coast for a day, I'd again say that a quick trip on a another day to see Multnomah Falls and the edge of the Gorge is probably a must do--you can be back in time for plenty of stuff to do in Portland with that trip. Just don't drive back to Portland at rush hour and you'd be fine.

If you can only do one, do the coast.

I agree with CanuckInPortland, let the weather be the deciding factor.

You could rent and watch all seasons of Grim. It shows the scenery and I think it captures the spirit of the area. We even have a large collection of well hidden monsters. They are there but you are unlikely to see them.

Coast is a whole day trip. You can go up the gorge and see Multnomah Falls in a partial day and combine it with something else on the same day.

Gorge incl Multnomah Falls, go around Mt. Hood and have dinner at Timberline Lodge. Doable in a day.

For a really weird book with a Portland/Eastern Oregon setting, check out Red Moon (which has lots of strangeness including a werewolf rendition of the Pioneer Square tree-lighting bomber and werewolves taking over the Pittock Mansion.)
