Portland's problems are establishing realistic priorities, making good and quick decisions, and spending the tax money in the correct places at the right times.

Other than that, Portland is a pretty good place to live if you don't go around tripping over junkies crawling out of choo-choo trains on their way home to their subsidized housing after selling tainted meat to food cart owners.
Or go looking for gangs of junkies riding the choo-choo trains.

The only thing worse than junkies and choo-choo trains is junkies ON choo-choo trains!

Last week my dad was here visiting from the East Coast and he loved Portland but was appalled at the number of homeless (he referred to them as vagrants, which seemed a bit harsh, but whatever) in town, especially on the MAX and the Streetcars. I had to explain to him that there just isn't the social pressure to succeed on the West Coast that exists in other parts of the country, so some people just fall through the cracks when they are not motivated to succeed or their home life is less than ideal.

I still think we should keep in mind that their lives are the closest thing to hell that you can experience in this country and we should feel compassion towards them, even if their problems are of their own doing. After all, for the most part the only way they effect us negatively is by being very visually unappealing. And by selling crotch meat to food cart vendors.
