Kidding, but I had to say it.
Boston and NJ are horrible places to drive IMO and Los Angeles is fine but I usually need to step on the gas to keep up so I usually have hubby drive when visiting. My brother in SF says that the LA influence has drastically changed the way Bay Area people drive and the commute times have risen quite a bit since I left 20 years ago. There are a lot of crazy drivers out here in WA County on the freeways but the speed limit seems to be respected throughout the Portland metro. I laugh when I see a driver with a CA license plate who seems confused at how slow we drive here. BTW, SF and the Bay Area used to be a place where you could go five miles over the posted speed limit and you were fine but not anymore. You can blame certain CA drivers for crazy speedy driving... we can agree on that!

I grew up hating Los Angeles and was taught that L.A. Sucks but now, as an adult, I have good friends from L.A. and I surprisingly, like visiting the city! It's funny how we all have biases but moving forward and challenging ourselves is good for the individual and community. I have tried to be part of my community in Portland and plan on volunteering and giving back to my new home, Beaverton. There are transplants who embrace their new culture and others who never quite make the effort. Thanks for your feedback.
Do you write? I used to write (paid) parenting articles for a Portland website and had to give it up because they wanted a lot of localized knowledge about things to do and events that I just didn't have. Besides, my son is grown now.

Wonder why that is?

Just sayin'.....
This forum has been a hotbed of negativity the last few weeks so I think that's why I, can't speak for a whole group of people, has tried to put forth a point of view that represents my opinion. So now a few of us represent all CA transplants in Oregon? I can handle myself and speak for myself. I like how expressing an individual viewpoint is considered, "whining".

Seriously, this is why The Portland Forum is developing a reputation for being unwelcoming. Notice how few people feel comfortable posting lately? Nonsense is subjective, I guess.

I am not a writer by trade but do enjoy writing and am very passionate about the schools especially here in Portland Metro. My kids have been fortunate to have wonderful teachers here.

The reasons I moved to Portland from Florida (5-1/2 years ago now) are still valid for me; moderate weather (seldom too hot or too cold to be able to go places as I get older), great public transportation, a writing mecca, a good place to enjoy my later years. I've made some good friends here. Housing affordability, however, is the fly in the ointment, as it is for many. I have wrestled with this issue for some time now; I haven't been priced out of the area, but I've evaluated other cities that would perhaps give me more value for my housing dollar. I've finally come to the conclusion that I am going to stay here no matter what. I like my life here; I could perhaps be happy elsewhere, but I'm not willing to go through the expense and upheaval when I am just a few years away from retirement. Plus, I now have family here. It was a good move in 2010, and I'm still glad to be here.

The best fine Oregon whine is "Oh No, is it raining again"? Not a Pinot Gris. Nor anything against Californians.

Your "Individual Viewpoint" that seems to be considered so unique is pretty much a Oregon/Portland Stereotype just like Portlandia has become.

I guess there are enough real examples to perpetuate the myth though.

Californians and other transplants should just quit whining about what they perceive Oregonians are saying about them, figure it out, and live the real deal.

They would be much happier.

I usually follow your posts but this one has confused me. My view points only represent me and not every CA resident and transplant. As for the negativity on this Portland Forum and the ridiculous Californian bashing, just read posts from the last few weeks and you will understand what I say. As for being happy... well, I am on the couch watching The Mets and content knowing my kids are in good schools, my neighbors seem respectful, my property taxes are used well and I keep "discovering" a " new" restaurant out here in Beaverton that makes me quite happy I moved to the West side. BTW, I have plenty of "Oregonian" friends and acquaintances and each individual, I interact with as an individual. I am sure not ALL Oregonians have the same personality, values, thoughts, beliefs. I don't believe I come to this forum to perpetuate stereo types of Oregonians though I can poke fun of my people... oh, the dreaded Bay Area Transplant. Actually, most CA transplants I meet out here are very happy they made the move.
