Trying hard to find a place near downtown, (ideally an apartment, in NW/Goose Hollow or Hawthorne/Buckman) But in searching came across an offer for a room in a 4B/2Ba house (moderate size, clean looking pictures) in King for $950/month. All utilities included, street parking, and about a mile from the N Killingsworth MAX station.

Two main questions: 1) Is this a decent deal or could I do better? and 2) given I am a mid-twenties socialite, is this a good area to live in?

I don't even know what constitutes a good deal to your generation.

$950 for a room? Wow.

I don't know the area. Whether or not it is a good deal depends upon who else lives there and how many other people live there.

A decent studio in a good area might cost you $1,000, so if the bedroom is bigger and you have access to all the rest of the house, living room, kitchen, dining room, a nice big backyard, maybe it isn't too much to pay.

You want to be careful about that "street parking". In some areas, that means there is virtually no parking and many multiples of cars are fighting over a couple of spaces at the curb.

All utilities included might be worth a couple hundred bucks, depending exactly upon what utilities are included. Internet and cable TV can be rather costly, so if those are included, that is attractive.

A room for rent in a house on MLK? No, it's not a good deal.

No, I wouldn't pay that much for that area. I probably wouldn't pay that much for a room in a house in any area but no parking space in that area especially would be a definite deal breaker.

That doesn't sound like a great deal to me. For $1,000 you should be able to at least find a studio. Even in this market, that amount is too much for just a room. And street parking could mean a lot of different things. In parts of NW Portland that would mean driving around and around until you can find a spot that you can park in overnight. Street parking varies a lot by neighborhood especially close-in.

That is not a good deal for a single room. Probably other tenants trying to find a sucker to pay more than their share.

Seems a bit steep unless it's a darn good room in a very quality place.
