Default Clearcutting trees along SW Barnes Road

Hey Portlanders, If you want to see development gone wild look no further then Cedar Mill out in Washington county. This newclearcut/development has a sign which says; Coming Soon:TIMBERLAND! If you drive along SW Barnes Road between Cedar Hills Blvd and Cornell Road, you will see a brand new massive aprtment complex on the north side of the road. Formerly Tuefel Nursery, the entire land parcel it now sits on used to be a surrounded by huge old-growth Douglas Fir filled forest. Go see how every last tree (I'm not kidding) on this lot has been cut down with your own two eyes. TIMBERLAND? There isn't a single tree left on the entire lot. When developers which cut down forests and pave them over make a name for it, how do they justify giving it a name like TIMBERLAND? Good Grief!

That's par for the course. They always name 'em for what's not there any more.

If a subdivision is called "Quail Creek," you can be sure that all the quail were permanently flushed and the creek dammed.

"Fir View"? Chopped-down firs and a view...of other houses.

"Sylvan Meadows"? Twenty-seven cul-de-sacs next to an access road.

The one that puzzles me is "The Homes at Peterkort" or whatever they call it. I don't know what a "Peterkort" is, but I know it's not there any more.

Exactly why I can't stand new subdivisions and prefer to live in older neighborhoods. How is a house that looks like every third one down the street and is seperated by a five foot side yard appealing?

Gosh I just hate that.

All over the metro area they waltz in and lay waste to every single tree.

You are a very astute observer indeed. Peterkort is the former farming family that used to own almost all of the former orchard and forest land along both sides of Barnes Road between St. Vincent's and Cedar Mill before it was permanently paved over.

Tuefels Nursery is nothing but a memory of a once very bucolic and forested setting.

I drive up Scholl's Ferry to take my son horseback riding and have been horrified at the progression of track homes that extend all the way to Roy Rodgers and beyond...

Where are all these people coming from?! Such beautiful, scenic land....Until recently I had never been out that way and was shocked at all the building. And there's pretty much no public transport out that way either.

sometimes when I hear this kind of stuff I feel life is just one big cosmic joke. Developers who come up with these names, they can't be doing it with a straight face!
