Default Chicago to Portland?

Hrrmm... interested in possibly making this move in the future... but it will probably be Chicago > Nowhere > Portland...

I am looking for cities that more suit me... in research portland seems about the ideal place. I am very "Green" so to say... quite anti capitalist, counter culture mindset... and do not like the extreme cold, love the outdoors... but if I want to keep participating in said "economy" (I'd like not to) portland seems feasible to live in.

I live on very very minimum stuff, and don't really like the materialistic/business minded aspect of chicago... too centralized, but lots of culture... I could really care less about overpriced trendy stuff, which seems more of a Seattle thing... definitely into eco movements, slow food, that kind of things...
I also never want to have a car again, I do not have one now.

how are tech jobs out there? I would probably want a studio, 1 br, or eco house... I would like to bike or walk everywhere, possibly participate in cheap co ops (fruits/veggies) or even get them FREE. Anywho I think I am due for a visit.

thoughts?
This is still a few years off in planning for sure... just want a general idea of the scene there.
