Why don't you say where you live exactly? From what I've seen, people who complain about gangs for the most part aren't even living IN Portland. Just like the poster who lives in Aloha and complains about PORTLAND when he's over 20 minutes away. Different world.

I just moved to Portland with my Illinois money and my Kenyan education and my Saab with Land-o-Lincoln plates. I am driving up your cost of living with every breath I take. Whoops.

Exactly. We lived in NW Portland for 7 years and found it to be an extremely safe neighborhood. It is news to me that Portland has a "gang problem". Was the poster thinking about some other Portland? I can agree some areas might be prone to it but it is definitely not the impression any long timers would have.

Face it people. New people are moving in, and the population is rising in EVERY city. And people in every city think they it's their city alone that is being taken over by outsiders. Nope. That's just the way the world is in the 21st century. I've seen people in soooo many cities say "Oh my god it's changing so much here." Well, that's just how the world is these days. We are in a rapidly changing time. It's easy for people to move, and people are moving around the U.S. a lot and the overall population is growing almost everywhere.

Also, for all those people you see moving in, there are people moving out too. What point am I making here? Just chill out and don't worry about new people. Because it's like that everywhere and you're not going to stop it. You can;t stop people from moving in and out of a major city.

If you really want to live in a place where new people never move in, try a small, isolated town. In a city the size of Portland....... deal with it. That's what cities are all about, people going in and out and things being dynamic. By nature, a city will naturally have and in and out flow of people.

That being said. I might move to Portland myself See ya up there.

I am a liberal and an environmentalist and I want to be where plants grow with wild abandon.
Hurry up then because with all the green spaces within the city being plowed under to build housing there are fewer left each year. It used to be one could walk in many neighborhoods and see wildflowers and even roses growing in empty spaces between houses and in vacant lots. They have been replaced with "skinny houses;" houses that are so narrow, it looks like one is viewing them sideways when one is looking at them straight on.
That's one change I am sad to see in Portland along with the McMansions that now dot the hillsides where once there were small forests. But don't despair, we are still green just not as much as we used to be.

Default well......

I don't understand the bubble gum thing you have going on but I do understand where u are coming from. My family is multiracial and we are hoping to move to Oregon in a couple of years. I understand that Oregon is a more natural, environmental state and I respect that. However, I think that you should embrace the change on all walks of life and accept them, I thought that was what Oregon was all about, that "hippy love" so to speak.

NYC locals feel the same way you do about Portland. I'm finding that I'm mostly finding people from other states and countries who have that "NYC dream" (which usually doesn't happen). I hardly find any locals anymore, it's depressing.

I am sorry you were so oppressed in your small hometown were nobody understood you! BUT! Go somewhere else. Portland's charm is going to disappear. No one that moves here actually stays here. They come here long enough to change the political and economic landscape and decide it is too boring, but in their wake us natives have to deal with high prices and new bills about urban growth. If you don't plan on staying here more than " a few years" than don't bother coming. If you are not going to acculturate -than don't bother. Go somewhere else where they don't have as much pride in sustaining the social vs econ vs green balance. Please. Seriously. "Nice place to visit, please don't stay" Tom McCall. I am tired of it! pay your taxes, register your car and license, get an Oregon education and stay here for more than 10yrs!! I dare you.
I stayed for ten years and couldn't F..n wait to get out. Wish I hadn't taken so log to make the jump. Oregon education, that's rich, they tax the crap out of you and still have crappy schools. Portland is an overrated, Left Wing Septic tank. Listen to them, don't move to Portland, let them have that trash heap. Portland ruins the entire state. If you want to live somewhere in Oregon try Central Oregon. Portland will suck the life out of you!!
