Wife and I (both earlythirtysomethings) are going to Portland for a conference from the 17th to the 21st of March. We won't have too much time to explore, as she will be busy at the event and I'll likely be "working from home" on at least the weekdays, but we will have at least a couple half-days in which to roam. We'll be staying around MLK/Ainsworth and will likely have a car at our disposal. Her conference will be Downtown. Just thought I'd ask some of the locals for things we could do to get a good feel for the city. TIA!

Walk down NE Alberta St. to look in the shops and have coffee; have a meal at Pok Pok; catch a movie and a brew at the Baghdad theater; go up to the top of Mt Tabor park; walk around Laurelhurst Park; have lunch at the food trucks downtown; have a drink at Kelly's Olympian. Enjoy!

Or try something actually fun:

Go to the rose test garden/japanese garden/zoo.

Don't waste your time at any expensive "fusion" restaurants in Portland. They're awful, overpriced, and have absolutely no clue what they're doing other than throwing weird ingredients together to try to appease hipsters.

I second the Food trucks, there is so much diversity and good food to be had there, one of our (surprise) faves is a Paleo, vegan option- really fresh and delicious flavors- and we arent veggie people at all- love the prime rib saturdays at Podnah's for example... And they are relatively economical too (we are thrifty)...

There are many Food truck centers in Portland (where there are several in one location) - just google whats closest or most convenient to you...

Spend an early or late evening at Jake's Crawfish Happy Hour!

Enjoy Powell Books (nearby) and get "Portlandized" (Attend an author's reading / presentation). You MUST park in Powell's indoor parking lot to be truly Portland!

Enough Brew pubs within walking distance to float a keg.

The Parks are superb. If you have a car, head to Crystal Springs Garden next to Reed College, Should be some early blossoms and azaleas, Rhodies are a month out. Enjoy a tour of the nearby Joinery next to Woodstock Library

Bob's Red Mill has a nice cookery and tour. (South 82nd food trucks have a BIG lot / many choices).

Happy hours (early and late) are GREAT.

Probably some Tapa bars I have not found... so post a reply if you find good ones!

Hope you can find a Farmer's Market while you are here!

Hope you are FLYING, then you can enjoy another Portland GREAT (PDX). New Theater (free short 'local' films ) just opened in Terminal C. Good food, EZ access. good internet (Free)

Things to do in Oregon:

-You can walk in rain.
-You can run in rain.
-You can drive in rain.
-You can watch the rain.
-You can listen to the rain.
-You can watch other people walk in the rain.
-You can sing in the rain.
-You can go to beach in the rain.
-You can hike in the rain.
-You can taste truck/cart food in the rain.

For the last few weeks, it's been all about rain here. Did I mention the rain?

Happy hour at Clyde Common right next to Stumptown Coffee. Check out shops in the area, too. Washington Park is my favorite Portland spot and if not raining the zoo is awesome. If you enjoy yoga then check out The Pearl for amazing studios. Best donuts are Blue Star. If you are gluten free then check out Petunia's. East side has GEM for gluten free. Pie Hole on east-side has the yummiest treats- full of gluten. Elephant Deli on 23rd is a favorite Portland staple for my family. The Pearl has a bar scene and good shopping. Don't miss Powell's.
