Default considering moving to portland?

my g/f and i are considering moving to portland sometime this year. she has been there before and her sister has actually lived there, however i have never been there. my main reason for wanting to move there is its geography. i love the mtns, the water and the fact that its much closer to the things we enjoy. skiing, hiking, camping, canada, etc. the main thing people seem to complain about is the weather which i am ok with. im from wisconsin and where i live in wisconsin the cost of living is very similar to portland so that isn;t much of an issue. i guess i would just like to hear other peoples thoughts and ideas of portland? also if anyone has some insight on the construction market, i am a foreman for a union masonry company and would more than likely continue with that. my gf is a hydrogeologist for the state. are we out of our minds?

lol, see: Stop Moving To Portland!!

Just kidding, I've lived in Oregon for 28 years, the point is you are not out of your minds, plenty of people are moving here all the time. In fact you will likely meet people from WI early on. Have a look at job boards online before deciding because the economy can be pretty tough here for job-seekers (because people are moving here faster than new jobs are created).

I would second his recommendation about having employment in place before you make the move. I've already got an offer from a company in PDX, and am just contemplating whether I want to take this offer or another in Austin. Of course, if you're independently wealthy, then just move on up!!!

well im not to concerned myself for finding work in my line of business, however my gf might have more trouble. we are not by anymeans wealthy but we are more than stable. and we would have jobs lined up before the move. we are also coming out to spend some time to check out the city closer at the end of the month. so that should help. thanks.

Well in that case, come on over and check out the city and see if you like it! I tell you there are so many immigrants from all over the US -- you will find several Packer's bars on Sundays if that's what you are into. Portland will embrace you both, especially if you take the time to learn a little local history and how to pronounce "Willamette", etc. The geography is awesome, no doubt, you are right about that. Don't complain too much about the rain to people (we know, it rains), and you'll have no problems!

Edit: if your gf is a hydrogeologist, she'll be in the right place, pretty much "hydro" anything has a place to do work here, am I right?
